The 425 TP is surely one of the great modern drivers of all time. The legendary 510 TP was so good as a minimal design, but somehow the slightly larger head of the 425 provides a little extra thump. This really is the moment where the full power arrived. No driver since, in spite of the claims, has provided any extra speed. The head shape is great and I had many happy years using this driver. I still will from time to time today. In fact as I write this I’m decided to build another one!

The Titleist 975d is a true classic. I played the 975d during my misery years - playing shit pro golf on shit golf courses, and not making any money. It was the only joy I had on a golf course throughout that period. This one will keep up with any joyless modern frying pan. It's got a semi-modern Diamana Kai Li 60 x shaft at 45 inches, and plays at a D3 swing weight.

I’m certainly not a fan of Greg Norman, I think he’s completely lost his marbles to be honest. He has however always been more clued up than the average pro on the equipment front. He has a decent rack of clubs and retains great clubs from the past. He does some of his own club work like any self respecting connoisseur so maybe he’s not all bad?

Any fan of great forged blades should be a fan of the Maxfli Australian blade. These beauties when through lots of iterations from the late sixties until this set, which was the last forged iron made by Maxfli, back in 1996.

There is an art to making a great five wood. Sadly, the big golf manufacturers gave up on art a long time ago.

The Silver Bullet is a cocktail comprising two staples of the British golf club - 50ml of gin, 30ml of Kummel. The Titleist 970 is from the brand's golden age, around the year 2000 when Tiger was on staff. Larry Bobka was responsible for making sure the tour guys got whatever they needed, and they weren't tied to what was available at retail - players of that era were much move involved in the process that today's tour players.

Around 2010, Yonex went through a spell of making some serious good stuff. Ryo Ishikawa was a staff player, and their forgings came out of one of the very best forging houses in Japan. This driver comes from that era - it's a Yonex Ezone 380cc head, with such a perfect pear-shape that I christened the Pear Ulrich Yonexon after one of my favourite Swedes, Per Ulrich Johansson (who is married to Jesper Parnevik's sister - it's a small world, Swedish golf),

Tony Covey from MyGolfSpy once saw me playing with this shaft in my Superquad driver, and said it was like putting whipped cream on a turd. Having only just met him, I was slightly taken aback.
